Mushrooms

Alternative realities have been around since man first discovered Psilocybin Mushrooms. The magic mushroom as some call it induce hallucinations that can create an augmented reality experience. On the Erowid site users can find various experiences from people who have listed their stories. Depending on the hallucinations, one could possibly argue that drugs are a window to augmented reality. For example,

“… noticed that there was a kaleidoscopic array of colors on top of my vision, at which point I stop talking and just start taking it all in. [...] in the clouds, at first it just looked like a jumble of letters not in any particular order, I focused on them for a few minutes until they seemed to spell out “Welcome Home” at which point I decided to thank them out loud much to the surprise of my friends… “

However, the hallucinations are not controlled in anyway to create a specific experience, so are probably not a feasible pathway to proper augmentation of reality.
